Twenty minutes later, the three friends cautiously climbed the stairs to the third floor after having left Moseby safely in Ellen’s room behind a closed door and a salted threshold. They carried their gear with them, planning to conduct a full investigation to get to the bottom of what was haunting Vincent Sherry’s old planner and why.

They set up their full-spectrum cameras on tripods in three corners of the room. Ellen placed her EVP recorder on the bed beside the planner, which lay open on the bed to the month of the Sherry murders—September. Tanya lit three candles and set them on window ledges, and Sue, who had lit the end of a sage smudge stick, gave them each a bath with its smoke.

They placed a cat ball beside one of the candles and Mini Maglite flashlights beside the other two. The flashlights had been screwed to that interim place between on and off, so a spirit would have only to tap on it to communicate with them. Sue conducted some initial readings with the EMF detector while Tanya did the same with a thermometer. Ellen recorded their findings on her notepad using a headlamp strapped to her forehead to see by.

So far, the book was behaving itself.

“What do y’all want to try first?” Sue asked.

Ellen picked up her recorder and turned it on. “Let’s ask questions with the EVP recorder. I’ll go first . . . If there’s anyone in here with us, anyone possessing this planner from 1987 that once belonged to Vincent Sherry, please know that we come in peace. We mean no harm. We want only to help. My name is Ellen. I’m a paranormal investigator. Can you tell me your name?”

They waited in silence for about fifteen to twenty seconds before Sue asked, “Can you tell us why you’re here?”

The flame on one of the candles went out.

After another twenty seconds or so, Tanya asked, “Do you have a message for us?”

Ellen waited another thirty seconds and then turned off her recorder. “Now let’s try using the spirit box app.”

As she reached over to return her EVP recorder to the bed beside the book, the pages of the book began moving as if someone were quickly thumbing through them. The book moved toward Ellen’s hand and seemed to bite her finger, giving her a paper cut.

“Ow!” she cried, shaking the finger that had been cut.

“What on earth?” Tanya cried. “Look!”

Drops of Ellen’s blood had fallen on a lined but otherwise blank page of the planner and were moving across the page to spell, “Hello.”

The three friends gaped as they watched the word form.

“Hello?” Sue said back to the book. “Can you tell us your name?”

They watched expectantly for a full minute before Sue turned to Ellen. “Try dropping more of your blood on the book. Maybe it needs something to use as ink.”

One of the flashlights turned on.

“I think that means we’re on the right track,” Sue added.
